Orthodontia and Orthodontics
Orthodontia and Orthodontics is the correction of various irregularities
of the teeth and the surrounding bone structure to provide normal
occlusion (coming together of teeth in the mouth), plus enhancing
the esthetic for a more pleasing appearance. Correction of these
irregularities can help ones look, chewing ability, and speech habits.
Most orthodontic patients are children, but currently an increasing
number of adults are also having orthodontic correction made.
To effect these corrections, fixed appliances (braces) are placed
in the patient's mouth. Treatment can generally last from two to
four years and may involve the removal of some existing teeth. The
patient makes weekly visits to the orthodontist at first, then monthly
appointments. The appliances, which are adjusted by the orthodontists,
move the teeth gradually, into a better arrangement. The final results
offer correct position of teeth, normal use of the muscles of the
mouth, pleasing esthetics and better general health.
